Half a World Away

Copyright 2005 Linda Ellis

As I tuck my children into bed,

you wake to greet the day...

your own home and your family

nearly half a world away.

As darkness fully blankets
this warm room in my house,

I lie my head upon soft pillows,

safely next my spouse

while the sun's rays shed their light

on the ground where you've slept

whatever hours you could

through the vigil you've kept.

I can almost feel your presence here

standing vigilant and strong

defending the future of my children

from those who wish to do them wrong.

Behind the armor and the weapons

and the vehicles of steel,

'tis the soldier whom I pray for;

'tis his shelter that I feel.

Though oceans away from your country,

you are never far apart,

for you take America with you

when it lives deep in your heart.

Carrying on years of tradition

honoring red, white and blue,

we're only blessed to be Americans

because of Americans like you.

Your courage and your fortitude

shield our lives from dismay,

and it is here we feel your protection,

though you're half a world away.
