One American
by Linda Ellis copyright 2004

I am but one American…
born free by the grace of God
where cannons roared and battles raged
to protect this sacred sod.

I am but one American…
who wouldn’t know the blessings granted me
if not for the blood of heroes shed
…to ensure my liberty.

I am but one American…
though not trained in confrontation,
I would give my life defending the ground
of this beloved nation.

I am but one American…
whose cherished freedoms solely rely
on the toil of brave men and women
who dare to go where heroes die.

I am but one American…
feeling my brother’s wounds and pains
for he bleeds the same red American blood
that courses through my veins.

I am but one American…
listening to events as they’re unfurled,
unable to conceive what you’re experiencing
on the other side of the world.

I am but one American…
one of this country’s faithful daughters,
whose gratitude for you is as endless
as Niagara’s falling waters.

I am but one American…
representing millions in this poem
who thank God for your strength and courage
and pray for your safe return home!
