This poem was written for Craig....a devoted father.

He Writes in Pink Ó 2000
by Linda Ellis

On his desk among the spreadsheets,
I noticed a picture was unfurled
where different colored crayons wrote:
"to the best daddy in the world."

I had asked him a detailed question
and while he thought out his reply…
I saw his planner lying open
and something quickly caught my eye.

Boldly written in his schedule
amid the items in black ink
several entries stood out clearly
having been written all in pink.

Though it really wasn't my business
and I tried hard to refrain…
my curiosity got the best of me
so I asked him to explain.

He said, "those are priority items;
dates and times of special events
and separating them in pink
to me, makes perfect sense."

As he turned his back, I studied
every colorful notation:

"Read to Kelley’s class today."
"Allyson's birthday celebration."

His priority items through the week
included each daughter's name.
"Have lunch at Kelley's school today."
"Allyson has a soccer game."

I felt a lump within my throat
as I read each handwritten thought
because I knew this father realized
that precious time cannot be bought.

He knows childhood years pass by
almost as swiftly as the breeze
and we must take every opportunity
to be a part of these memories.

And if every busy parent
would take the time to stop and think...
we just might have happier children
if we all would write in pink!
